A Thumbnail Sketch of Copyright Law - By Charlotte J.
Published by Charlotte on 2007/3/4 (5117 reads)

Copyright is a somewhat tricky concept for most people to grasp, so I'm actually somewhat sympathetic to those who initially have difficulty understanding why, if they own the physical embodiment of a copyrighted work, such as book or a DVD or a CD, they can't do absolutely anything with it that they please, including making copies for all their friends and family. The short answer is because one's rights to a copyrighted work are limited to its physical embodiment alone and don't extend to its contents, other than to use and enjoy them for your own personal pleasure in that form (there are some limited exceptions to this that I'll touch on further down in this article).
